Forests of cork oak and chestnut growing on schistose rock on the northern slopes.
Scrubland, dotted with maritime pines, umbrella pines and Aleppo pines on the southern slopes.
THE ROUTE:
The route starts from the Stade car park, on the eastern edge of the village. Winding your way through the typical narrow streets of Collobrières, you'll come to the ruins of Saint-Pons church, which watch over the village from their promontory.
Take the track that goes off to the left, then a tiny footpath. Immediately turn right towards the TV relay station. The route runs through undergrowth (keep to the right), back onto a track for a moment, then immediately along a small path to the left that rises steadily. Leave the green gate on your right and climb up the track.
Arriving at a crossroads of several paths on level ground, leave the GR 90 and head right (wide path, beehive) towards the ruined mill 200m away. View of the Malière valley and the Desteou chasm from the ruined mill. Take the path heading west down to the Saint-Pons oratory. Continue straight ahead (west), across the embankment, along the path that runs along the ridge to a track.
Turn right onto the concrete track, continue straight ahead (a little below) along the small path that climbs back up to the ridge (left), cross a low stone wall and then reach a collet where the path turns slightly left through the cork oaks, descends and passes to the right of an impluvium (water reserve). Leave the path which descends to the right and go straight ahead, the route then continues to the right, descends and crosses another path.
Turn right then left before the water tower, a path which leads to a wide track. Continue to the right.
At the next crossroads, go straight on past the houses, the path becomes narrow and leads to a track, turn left and then right at the water treatment plant. Continue along the path until you come to a bridge and then the church of Notre Dame des Victoires. Go around it to the left and down rue Jean Jaurès to the tourist office.
TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Bring hiking boots or trainers, water, hat or cap.
Always keep up to date with the weather conditions. During the hunting season, stay on the marked trails. In an emergency, call 112 for help. Traffic and parking of all motorised vehicles on DFCI roads is prohibited all year round. From June to September, before driving in the Var mountain ranges, check the opening conditions on the fire risk map (updated at 5pm every day for the following day) or by calling the tourist office.
