Villages et cités de caractère" is an official label, issued by the Comité départemental du tourisme, with the objective of creating a network of municipalities with a remarkable architectural and landscape heritage in order to develop tourism. These communes commit to highlighting their respective resources by meeting the criteria of a charter established by the departmental authorities.
Who can obtain the "Villages and towns of character" label?
Any town with a rural character, whose population does not exceed the INSEE threshold of 2,000 inhabitants, with a remarkable architectural heritage and landscape (classified or registered sites and monuments), and which enhances this heritage by providing a quality welcome (restaurants offering local specialties, sufficient accommodation facilities, existence of a tourist information office).
